This romantic gothic castle is near the village of Clonmellon, in County Westmeath, Ireland. It was built in 1780, replacing an earlier castle on lands granted around 1667 to Benjamin Chapman, a captain in Cromwell's army. In recent years the castle was a roofless ruin, but has been splendidly restored by the present owners. The ruins were the childhood playgound of the artist's wife Sarah who lived on a farm nearby, beside another fine house, Ballinlough Castle. .

T E Lawrence ('Lawrence of Arabia') was the illegitimate son of Sir Thomas Chapman, the seventh baronet, of Killua
